I set up MAC address filtering on my VZW router for security reasons with my job. They told me I couldn't have the wifi enabled while using a VPN for some reason. I think they're idiots, am I wrong?

MAC filtering never really works. Anyone wanting to get on the wifi can just run a sniffer for a few minutes, find a MAC that is allowed and use it on their device. MAC filtering is useless. As for ...
