This is the biggest softshell turtle we have admitted in 2025, weighing in at just over 22lbs! She was found along I-75 with some wounds and abrasions along her carapace (upper shell) and plastron (lower shell), so we suspect she was hit by a car. Luckily, this turtle has no fractures of the limbs or shell, which are common in victims of car strikes. We found this Florida Softshell Turtle hatchling at our doorstep today, literally. Softshell turtles are water turtles and they can't survive long away from the water. This little hatchling was very dry and hadn't made it to the water yet so we placed him in a shallow bowl of water and took him a couple hundred feet away to the closest fresh water. There was no way he was going to make it to the water without some help. The video is very short because after releasing him, we wanted to leave him
