Prefrontal cortex

The prefrontal cortex does not run on willpower. It runs on dopamine, norepinephrine, oxygen, glucose, and safety. When someone is: • stressed • masking • anxious • running on adrenaline • not eating • not sleeping • overstimulated the brain shifts into survival mode, driven by the amygdala and brainstem, and blood flow is literally pulled away from the prefrontal cortex. That’s why: • you “know what to do” but can’t do it • you freeze • you can’t start • your memory goes blank • you feel stupid
