Gopher tortoises do so much for our ecosystems, which is why we’re starting our biggest gopher tortoise habitat enhancement project yet! 🐢 💪 Gopher tortoises need open-canopy, sandy habitats with low grasses and vegetation. In Florida, these habitats are in decline, so we’re making a few of our own! Join us as we clear overgrown vegetation, plant native species, and restore habitat for gopher tortoises on our preserve lands this fall and winter by signing up to volunteer with us: https://sccf.

Join us for a Day in the Life of a Gopher Tortoise for Florida Gopher Tortoise Day! Gopher tortoises are a keystone species whose burrows provide important habitats for over 350 commensal species like indigo snakes, burrowing owls, etc. This is why protecting gopher tortoises & their habitat is so essential. | Defenders of Wildlife

2x a day we graze the gopher tortoise patients as part of their rehab treatment plan. This gives them sun time, fresh air, movement and time to graze in the wild, preparing them for release day! Live near Naples, FL? Become a volunteer here and graze with us! 🐢 | Conservancy of Southwest Florida

🎉 Happy #GopherTortoiseDay! 🐢 For 60 million years, gopher tortoises have roamed Florida’s uplands, shaping the landscape and creating burrows that shelter hundreds of species. These gentle, long-lived reptiles play a vital role in our ecosystems, but they need our help. As part of our effort to educate the public about this important and wonderful creature, FWF has developed two signs that provide information about how to interact with this threatened species safely. These two signs display i

Take a look inside a gopher tortoise burrow! Biologists discovered a tortoise deep inside this burrow at Branan Field WEA in northeast Florida during a survey in December. Gopher tortoise burrows average 15 feet in length and 6.5 feet deep. The standard methodology we use is Line Transect Distance Sampling (LTDS) with burrow scoping that allows biologists to count actual tortoises and not just the burrows. Historically, the FWC counted burrows and estimated two burrows per tortoise. The LTDS met

How much do you know about the threatened gopher tortoise? A helpful video from the FWC includes more information on this keystone species and offers ways the public can get involved in conservation efforts. Citizens are also encouraged to download our free Florida Gopher Tortoise smartphone application. With the app, you can record the location of gopher tortoises you may see in your yard, neighborhood or crossing the road. Users can test their tortoise knowledge by taking a quiz, and sighting

To celebrate #WildTurtleWeek, take a moment to appreciate this important ecosystem engineer: the gopher tortoise! More than 350 different species have been documented using the burrows that gopher tortoises create. As you can see in this video, these range from mammals, like the imperiled Florida mouse, to amphibians, like the secretive gopher frog! Hundreds of invertebrates also use the burrows, and some species cannot persist without them. To help support gopher tortoise conservation, FWC rese

The gopher tortoises who were brought to our wildlife hospital after being found with spray paint on their carapace are doing well and slowly recovering under our care. We use a special product to remove the paint and let it sit for about 5 minutes. We then remove the product by gently scrubbing it away. We have to do this process in stages because it can be very stressful for the tortoise. We hope to release them back to the wild when all the paint is removed and they are assessed again for any

This baby Gopher Tortoise was found crossing a dirt road after visiting a conservation site. Baby gopher tortoises are becoming harder to find as their population become too old to reproduce and their habitats become more fragmented. Seeing one in the wild is often a positive sign for the local population and habitat conditions.🐢 📸Quentin Fairchild | Mississippi Museum of Natural Science
